Just recently, Canadian geographers have used combinations of physical characteristics to identify ecozones. Because each ecozone has different conditions, it was made to support unique communities of living things, including people. Ecozones help focus attention of conservationists on environmental issues and protection across all of Canada. For example, Parks Canada has almost completed creating at least one large national park in all 15 ecozones.
Physical regions can have sharp boundaries, or they can pass through transition zones. Drawing regional boundaries becomes harder when different environmental factors are combined. The lines on the map below may look precise, but actually are quite imaginary. The regional characteristics are strongest in the middle of each zone and gradually fade toward the boundary lines.
